Battery Builders, LLC has a strong reputation in the marketplace not only for our industry-leading lead-acid battery products and services, but also as a responsible steward in the area of sustainability.
We are committed to leading the industry in the area of building a fully sustainable supply chain in every facet of our operations. Our focus for these efforts is on maximizing the utilization of best practices in the mining of lead, lead production, and the manufacturing of products.
BBI is an industry champion in the area of lead-acid battery recycling. In 2021 alone, BBI utilized 5,896,391 pounds of recycled lead alloy in the production of our products. That same year, 97,500 pounds of lead paste was recycled back into BBI battery production. As a company, we will continue to dedicate a significant amount of resources to further our efforts in the area of sustainability, and encourage our partners in the industry to follow our lead.
National Recycling Rate Study
In July 2023, Battery Council International released their National Recycling Rate Study, confirming "the outstanding achievements of the lead battery industry in maintaining a remarkable 99% recycling rate for lead batteries; making lead batteries the most recycled consumer product in the United States". Additional highlights of their study include:
- Lead batteries have been recycled for more than 100 years
- A new lead battery is typically comprised of 80% recycled material
- Modern, closed-loop recycling in the US keeps more than 160 million lead batteries from landfills each year
- Lead from lead batteries can be infinitely recycled with no loss of performance
- The Sustainability Consortium (TSC), a global non-profit, ranks lead batteries as one of only five consumer product categories to make the elite club (scoring 64 and over)
